What is baby swimming?

Baby swimming is healthy play, as well as an intense and positive experience for child and parents. Baby swimming stimulates the child's motor development, helping them to quickly gain control of their body and movements. In addition, the child's senses are stimulated through play, socializing and exercises.

Your child will learn to be comfortable in the water, and if they continue with water activities, they will find it easier to learn to swim on their own.

Our goal is for the child to be able to breathe calmly and regularly in the water and, with help, to float on the surface and move happily underwater. Furthermore, the child should be able to glide through the water and move forward with arm and leg movements.

Baby swimming is always on the child's terms, i.e. we make sure to create safety and development through recognizable exercises/routines, with small progressions in the teaching.

Classes take place in the hot water pool, which is 34 degrees and lasts 30 minutes. The instructor is in the water.

Team division

Practical information

There will be approx. 12-15 children in each class, aged approx. 3-12 months. We offer the following age division:

  • 3-5 months
  • 6-12 months (then we offer toddler swimming)

We recommend that your child is around 2-3 months old before you start baby swimming.

If the child gets tired or has had enough input before this time is up, we recommend that you go to the changing room early. It is most important that the child has a good experience.

To sign up for baby swimming, you need to purchase a course.

Good advice

If possible, always arrive in plenty of time for baby swimming and make the whole changing situation a calm experience. The stress of changing can make your baby feel unsafe when you get in the water.

If you're late out the door, prioritize the quiet changing room - it's okay to be a little late getting into the water.

Let your child have some food about 30-45 minutes before class starts. This way you can prevent an upset stomach if the child should ingest some water in the pool. If you feed your child just before entering the water, you risk them regurgitating, which is not good for water quality.

When you get out of the pool, it's a good idea to wrap your child in a dry towel. Make sure your child's ears are well dried and put a hat on them before you leave the hall.

Good hygiene in the swimming pool

It is important that both parent and child are washed thoroughly. Washing is done without swimwear in the shower and soap must be used. Hair must be wet unless a shower cap is used, and any makeup must be removed (even if you do not plan to have your head in/under the water).

Good hygiene is essential for a clean pool where both parents and children swim!

The child must wear approved swimwear for babies + swim diaper underneath, which must fit tightly to the thighsso that any feces stays in the diaper/bathing suit. The swimwear must not be bought too big, as it will have no effect on "accidents." If you discover that the child has had a bowel movement and this is enclosed in the swimwear, simply go to the changing room and change/wash the child and swimwear.

You can buy diaper swimwear in Haraldslund and get a diaper at the information desk.

In the changing rooms, changing pads, car seats, strollers and bathtubs will be available.

For toddler swimming, we have the following age distribution:

Lessons every other Sunday in even weeks.

2:50-3:20 p.m. 3-4 year olds
3:25-3:55 p.m. 2-3 year olds
4:00-4:30 p.m. 1-2 year olds

In the classes, we splash and play in the water, which helps support the child's sensory motor development. It is an advantage if the child has attended baby swimming classes, but this is not a prerequisite, as we adapt the challenges to each individual's level. The aim is to create a sense of security and familiarize the child with being in and around water. A course consists of 10 sessions.

Toddler swimming should not be confused with swimming lessons, and all children must have an adult with them in the water. Toddler swimming is a further development of our baby swimming and takes place in our warm water pool with lovely warm water at 34 degrees.
The primary purpose is for children to get used to being in the water and to move around in the pool and play, both above and below the water.

Plask og Leg in Haraldslund is for all children between the ages of 3 and 6 – both those who have never swum before and those who are already used to playing in water. Lessons take place every other Sunday in odd-numbered weeks.

Classes every other Sunday in odd-numbered weeks.

2:45-3:15 p.m. Level 1
3:20-3:50 p.m. Level 2
3:55-4:25 p.m. Level 3

Classes take place in the hot water pool and a course lasts up to 10 times. There is one adult in the water per child. This can either be mom, dad, a grandparent or another adult that the child feels comfortable with. Parents are an important part of the training, as they are the children's best role models when it comes to trying new things and actively participating in the training. For hygiene reasons, everyone must be washed with soap before swimming - completely naked without swimwear. (makeup and jewelry must also be removed).

What should we bring to class?

All children must bring swimming goggles. These should only cover the eyes and not the nose. Please note that the use of fins is not allowed. On the other hand, you are allowed to use two abdominal belts.

There are several good reasons for the ban on the use of water wings:

  • The wings inhibit the baby's movements
  • The child gets an inappropriate body position in the water due to the unnatural buoyancy of the wings
  • The wings can cause the child to take longer than necessary to learn to swim
  • The ban on swim fins is in place for the sake of each child's learning.

The exercises are adapted to the individual child's age and learning ability, and no one is thrown in at the deep end. The focus is always on creating safety and enjoyment in the water.

Splash and play 1

The class is for children who have either taken baby swimming or have never swum before. The aim is to create safety, confidence, well-being and joy of being in water (water habituation). They learn this through various play activities and swimming exercises.

Splash and play 2

We continue to work with familiar exercises from Splash and Play 1 and develop them further. The aim is still to create a sense of safety and enjoyment in the water, it should be safe and good to go swimming.

Splash and play 3

We continue to work with the exercises from Splash and Play 2 and develop them further. Now we are also starting to practice the child becoming more and more independent of a parent in the water. Of course, support is provided to the extent necessary. In order to be able to participate in Splash and Play 3, it is a prerequisite that the child can get their head under the water.

Which team should you choose?

Children are constantly developing in all areas - physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially - and each area progresses differently and often in jumps. Therefore, there can be a wide range of ages in each class. Choose a class that suits your child's swimming ability to get the most out of your child's lessons.

There are 3 different classes/levels. Your child may need to take several courses in the same class.

Practical information

The clip card must be handed out before you go to class. Please arrive in good time the first time, in case there is a queue in our information center.
The card can be handed out about a week before the class starts.

It's always important to thoroughly wash the body of both adults and children before putting on your swimwear. Bacteria have better living conditions in warm water, and over the course of a
teaching day, we have many guests.

Therefore, always remember:

  • Baby and parent must be washed before putting on the swim diaper and swimwear.
This also applies to hair. If you do not want wet hair, a shower cap must be worn during the entire visit to the swimming pool.
  • Baby must wear both a swim diaper and tight-fitting swimwear. Swim diapers are available free of charge at the entrance to the swimming pool.

  • This ensures good bathing water and reduces the amount of chlorine for the benefit of both children and adults in the water.

You have the opportunity to bring a spectator to the baby swim. So if you have a grandparent or similar who would like to come and watch, they are more than welcome. If the spectator is not going in the water, entry is free. Remember to bring your own swim sandals or you can wear bare feet.
There is only room for one adult per baby in the water.

After the classes have started, it is no longer possible to cancel the purchase. Unused baby swimming vouchers can be used for a trip to the swimming pool for up to 6 months after the class has ended, you can simply use the voucher.

If you are prevented from attending a class once, you do not need to cancel.
